Spring/Summer 2010
The Sony KDL-52EX700 has its own private display in some prominent retail stores such as Best Buy. It's got the thin good looks Sony is counting on to impress with its great brightness on the showroom floor. In this review we delve deeply into the inner beauty of the TV as well to evaluate whether the internal processing and output match the aesthetics. The EX700 series ranks right in the middle of the pack in Sony's 2010 lineup in terms of feature offerings and price
PICTURE QUALITY RATING 91/100

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TOBE A SAVVY TV BUYER

It's all about the sharpness of the picture. That's determined by the number of horizontal lines on the screen and the number of pixels -- the color dots that make up the picture -- in each line.

The analog TV sets we grew up with and still watched in a vast majority of homes are capable of only displaying 480 lines with 640 pixels per line -- the benchmark called standard definition (SDTV).

The best of the digital high-definition TVs are capable of displaying 1,080 lines with 1,920 pixels per line, but sets that display 720 lines and 1,280 pixels also are called high-definition.

The reason there are two levels of high-definition TV has to do with programming. About 70 percent of broadcast television is available in high-definition, but not all of that high-def content is broadcast at the maximum resolution.

Even at the lower level, a high-definition TV picture can be like looking out your living room window, the colors and details are so crisp.

But buying a set isn't simply a matter of telling the salesperson you want a high-definition TV and then slapping down your credit card. That would be like walking into a car dealer and saying give me something with four wheels and an engine.

VIERA-TH-P5OV20D:

The Viera S2 series from Panasonic appears to share in the affordable 1080p plasma category with the U2 series. Available in larger sizes than the U2 series these plasmas feature a 1080p panel with Panasonic's 600Hz Sub-Field Drive and an anti reflective filter for using the TV in bright rooms. Viera Link allows a single remote to use with any connected Viera Link products.
3 HDMI Inputs, 2 USB Ports, PC Input and Viera Image Viewer round out the feature set of the TC-P50S2

We've noticed Panasonic plasma TVs improving the brightness of its TVs over the past couple of years. Apparently, 2010 will continue this trend as Panasonic is still gaining on LCD technology in the brightness area. Panasonic representatives explained that 2010 model will be still brighter than 2009 models with the new NEO PDP while still going for a deeper black dimension.
Panasonic did not appear to concentrate on the super thin TV presentation at CES 2010 as did many of the LCD manufacturers. Though we did not measure depth in the new Panasonic lineup it looked to be about the same as 2009 on the series at around a 3.5" depth. Panasonic stated that it was not a big focus this year. This will likely translate to very attractive price points on the 2010 Panasonic plasma models.
Panasonic TC-P58S2 which both give up 2", yield a better picture. Plasma TVs generally represent much better value in the 50 to 60" range than do LCD/LED TVs
